Why should you do digital detox session?

Imagine a situation when the current generation kids grow up and we tell them that in our childhood there were no mobile, internet or the kind of gadgets we use today. Our Gen-Y kids will be surprised and may even laugh at the situation.

Since, technology has invaded our life and has completely taken over our lifestyle, it's nearly difficult to believe that we could survive without technology few decades back. Today, kids prefer to get glued to the couch and do indoor activities which are primarily technology based.

Out door games have been replaced by play stations, meeting friends have been replaced by video chats, summer vacations are mostly confined to staying within house and doing things on mobile and internet. Search engines like Google are definitely more dominant today as compared with books.

Now friendship means getting connected on social networking websites. Now days, mostly people go on holidays and click photographs primarily to share on social networking. As I mentioned in one of my earlier blogs, today participation has a more dominating purpose than actual contribution in any incidence or event.

What is to blame for? Is it technology alone, simply not. A lot more credit goes to our over ambitious, fast paced and complicated lifestyle which has created a dis-balance between living and enjoying the life. Today, we earn but fail to enjoy. We prefer pretending to enjoy our life and to show off that our life is much more interesting and happening than what it actually is.

We can't ignore that technology has encroached our life, physical space has reduced and storage devices have become larger in capacity. Today, we simply get panic if our mobile loses its network or battery starts draining as if we are running out of oxygen for breathing. Our devices getting virus is not lesser painstaking than a real heart attack now. Internet data pack getting exhausted feels like losing blood platelets.

While, technology is really important and it's difficult to give this away completely, still, we should maintain some minimum distance and do away with engrossing technological devices during non-working hours and holidays. We should get some freedom from digital intoxication for our loving family. If our kids are becoming addicted of it, the onus is completely on us to not let them become engrossed with devices too much.

Ultimately, we are born humans and better remain like this instead of becoming slaves in hand of digital devices.

Online scam behind pet adoption- Beware

When I brought my first Labrador home, I had no idea that I will like it so much that I would like to have other dogs in my house. As I wanted to have another one in my house, I searched online for available pets for adoption and soon I found that there are plenty, however, it's really difficult to figure out the genuine availability for adoption.

I searched on as well and was hooked on with an add which read about available Maltese for adoption. I tried contacting him through given email ID and soon after interacting with him through email I developed a feeling that he could be a fraud. I noticed a lot of adds like this which promises to give you exotic pets free of cost but, there are few hidden things which you should look into before getting hooked up so much.

Beware of these important points.

1. They will call themselves foreigners.
2. They will send you a long attractive email to lure you with details of their pets.
3. They will ask you to provide all details like address, nearest airport, mobile, etc.
4. They will never provide their WhatsApp number.
5. They prefer contacting through Facebook chat and you will notice that their Facebook account is recently created just to fool people.
6. Finally, they will ask you to pay 50% advance of courier charges and they will provide you the account details of an Indian. If you further ask them, they will tell you that he is his friend who is helping him settle down in India. If you ask his friend's number, he will be silent.

Many pet lovers may get lured in to deposit the advance as it looks so attractive to get the exotic breeds almost free but it's a big scam going on.

One of such incidences happened with me recently where I was about to pay the 50% advance but then I thought of the above mentioned points and kept away from this.

You can see the copy of email conversation here for reference and to spread awareness.

I want to adopt your Maltese. I am in Gurgaon. How and where can we meet.

Ok good I will also like to inform you that you shall be required to deposit 50% of the payment before delivery takes place and the other 50% after delivery if you are ready to receive the puppy today let me know so I will Send you bank details where you shall make the deposit

I know it's a trap. I can't pay the money in advance. Try fooling someone else.

The New Age Transformation of Online and Offline News

We have seen huge transformation in news and media during last couple of decades and especially after the encroachment of social networking, search engines like Google and chat machines like WhatsApp.

Not all the news sources today we see are authentic or they may be simply pretending to be authentic. If we spare them from the debate of being authentic or not, it remains a big question whether or not mostly news are useful and relevant.

Today, before referring an online or offline source we spend much more time in establishing its authenticity which was not the case few years back.

So, why are we forced to raise this topic? Some of the useless or lesser relevant news topics today are like, 'Someone has broken their relationship because her fiancee doesn't like pets' OR 'An actor is endorsing something useful or meaningless or he is not endorsing something these days' OR 'someone is worshiping in temple' OR 'someone is surviving only on tea for years' OR 'monkeys are encroaching a college's campus' OR 'an actor/ actress is wearing red dress instead of blue' OR BLAH BLAH BLAH.

So, this is what we read in news papers, magazines or mostly online news sources. Media is inclined to publish and most importantly inclined to make popular what sounds interesting irrespective of the fact whether or not it's important and relevant. Media seriously can make or break an event or personality and they are smart enough to play with this. TRP is definitely a dominating and foremost purpose behind any effort these days. Journalism has been redefined drastically and has affected our life in every aspect.

Even, it's difficult to find anything interesting and relevant in physically printed news papers these days which once used to be a must watch and more importantly relevant watch for all age groups. News papers no longer are daily dosage of General Awareness, it has become a daily dosage of interesting facts and facts which drive our thoughts and influence our life.

Sometimes, social networking like Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp seem to be better source of quick anecdotes of important happenings. However, these also dominate the pre and post event discussions. For example, winning a medal in Olympics may be a news for a bunch of audience but what was trolling on Twitter before and after winning or losing that medal became more highlighted.

There is no doubt in the fact that sometimes mostly people press the like, dislike or share button without reading the whole topic and all that they want to ensure that they are the part of the event or incidence.

Besides, the over abundance of available information, quality of editing and language are definitely missing out largely from most of the online and offline sources, which is a real concern for the end reader.

We can't ignore the fact that what we want to make famous or infamous today has become much more convenient and technological, but things which are really important lose out its sheen sometimes in the over crowded and over flooded regime of sharing information.

What's the take on from Rio Olympics

Olympics, undoubtedly the most sought after and talked about sports event concluded recently in Rio, Brazil. Unfortunately, India couldn't make its presence count barring couple of face saving medals won by two amazing talented girls P V Sindhu and Sakshi Malik.

What's the reason behind such performance disasters in a global event like Olympics? If India can win World Cup in Cricket, then why not in others? Is it due to lack of talent in Indian athletes, are they not train-able, are they not hungry for medals, are they not having skills to compete at global level? I think, these can't be valid reasons. Why do we always blame and not introspect?

Why it's always sports person who is held responsible in losing cause? Why sports management is set free from such blames? More importantly, why not to blame the entire country for not having strong culture of sports?

Let's talk about the country's overall orientation and culture towards sports. Whenever, we meet others, how many times we ask the well being of other's children in terms of their performance in sports? The normal question would be that which school your child is attending, which class, how is he scoring, etc. Do we ever start the discussion  with asking about the interest of his child in sports. We definitely ask how much time his child devotes on studies but we rarely ask how much time he practices for sports.

As parents, we always prioritize studies for our children and want them to excel in academics. Sports is always left out to be done during liesure but there shouldn't be any compromise with studies.

As a result of this strong academic culture, Indian scientists constitute 33% of entire team of NASA and India has the largest number of Doctors, Engineers and other highly qualified people produced. If we don't prioritize sports over academics then why do we expect good performance in Olympics.

Unlike Cricket, other sports in India lacks due respect, glamour and money to promote people to come and take up sports as their career. Instead, many times people take up sports to secure their jobs in some or other field based on sports quota because they feel unsecured due to financial obligations and prefer prioritizing jobs over core sports.

Few initiatives like Kabaddi and Badminton leagues have really worked well in earning respect and recognition to players and results are positive. Today, Hockey is also in much better shape as compared with a decade ago in terms of overall promotion, respect and recognition which has resulted into some performances in recent Olympic worth mentioning.

Lack of proper infrastructure is another major lacuna in developing sports in country. Unless, you are in big cities and can spend money on availing sports infrastructure and coaching services, it's really difficult to expect the major transition in performance in Olympics.

So, in a nutshell, it requires a holistic approach towards developing a strong sporting nation that includes our focus, interest, priority, attitude and all possible facilities. Till then, we can only expect few miracles to happen and save our faces in grand events.

Professional Network With Ease

Networking is very important in our daily lives. Often the best jobs and opportunities are not advertised but filled by word of mouth. With this in mind, a good idea is to go and find them yourself. How is this done, do I hear you ask? By the simple process of networking.

A number of people feel networking is waste of time and it has no effect on personal relationships or being successful in your business. This concept is completely incorrect. Relationships and business have been built via the networking process for hundreds of years.

Networking is not about meeting hundreds of people, interacting with them with them and then never meeting them again. It’s but about getting to know each other and finding out if you are able to make the relationship mutually beneficial for both of you. If you aren’t able to – then see if you can introduce them to someone more compatible to their business.

A simple example of how easy networking can be is the example of a woman who used to love writing articles. One day she decided to donate one of her articles to the local newspaper so it could be published and people around the world could have the chance to read it. The article focused on an event, which was coming up and was hosted by a woman’s publishing group. The group not only liked the article, they appreciated what she had done, so they recommended her to a national magazine. So now, not only does she get to write regular articles, she also gets paid for it. This example shows how networking can be done easily, if well thought out. Touching base with a few people can in fact lead to reaching many.

By referring your friends or relatives whom you think are well suited for a job is another way to network. I heard a story of someone recommending a friend for a teaching position with a nonprofit organization. Interestingly enough after getting the position, he returned the favor by referring his friend into a job he had heard about. Funny how things work out!

Family and friends are the easiest and best way to increase your network among colleagues and friends. There are many industries that work on filling positions this way and some even pay commission.

When looking for a new job, it may be worth joining a networking group focusing on the sector of business you are interested in. It’s a great way to meet people, do research into companies by asking questions of those people who work there. Often the opportunity may just be within that particular networking group.

The examples above show that in order to network effectively and in an efficient manner, you do not need to be outgoing or know a lot of people. All it requires is being creative, listen well, ask relevant questions and develop a good reputation with others. You would be amazed at how many doors will open for you.

Ways to Manage Stress

Although stress is often viewed as a negative, it is actually a natural and normal physical response. A stress response is simply the body’s ability to defend and protect itself. This “fight-or-flight” reaction can help a person stay energetic, alert, and focused. These behaviors can be beneficial. A winning touchdown, successful board room presentation, or an A on a test can all be partially due to a healthy stress response. However, too much stress can become harmful and can cause extreme damage to a person - physically, mentally, and relationally.

Chronic stress is caused when the body is subjected to an overwhelming amount of physical and psychological threats. Since the body cannot differentiate between extreme or moderate stress triggers, it reacts with the same intensity, regardless of how major or minor the cause. This means that a bounced check or a long commute can be the catalyst for intense stress related symptoms (that may feel as intense as a real life-or-death crisis). Symptoms may include muscle tension, headache, fatigue, anxiety, changes in eating habits, mood swings, lack of enthusiasm, and/or an upset stomach.

Each person has a different tolerance level when it comes to calculating stress. It is important for each individual to understand his or her stress level threshold. Factors that influence stress tolerance include: one’s ability to deal with emotions, one’s preparedness for stress-inducing circumstances, one’s sense of control, one’s attitude, one’s support network, one’s physical health and nutritional status, one’s fitness level, and one’s sleep habits. These variables are what enable one person to maintain a sense of calm while another person feels completely overwhelmed.

Just as each person must evaluate the factors that cause stress, it is essential for individuals to consider the ways in which they react to stress, and whether or not their responses need to be altered. Some individuals react by freezing up and becoming extremely internally agitated. Some become very outwardly agitated and may become volatile. Others become withdrawn and show little to no emotion. Understanding personal stress triggers and individual reactions are key in moving forward and coping with stress.

Although stress can affect any individual, those with fast-paced and challenging work environments (such as medical professionals) are more likely to experience the symptoms and signs of stress. Strategies for managing stress (whether it’s work related or personal) include: avoiding unnecessary stress, changing one’s situation or environment, adapting to and accepting one’s environment, upping one’s fitness level, and scheduling time for personal leisure and relaxation. Taking control of one’s life and prioritizing what’s truly important (and worth stressing over) are integral methods of managing stress.

Most Effective Time Management Strategies

If you desire to have good time management then you need to have a strategy or an action plan. Following these strategies will help you get the most out of your days.

First thing to do is Prioritize your work.

Start each day by ranking the things that you much do. Starting with the most important and unpleasant tasks first, then go from there. Those things that can wait for later that day should be listed towards the bottom of your list. Don't make your list too long because there are only so many hours in a day and you don't want to feel like you will never get it all accomplished.

Second thing is to Assign Work Time Frame for each task.

At first this might not seem realistic but it is mostly so that you will have some sort of idea how long it will take to finish each task. You will find that once you start a task, it won't really take very long unless it is a big project. If so, then break it down so that you can see some progress.

Third Be Flexible.

Unexpected things come up from time to time so if you have to stop to take care of some other matter, do not worry and stress out if you don't accomplished a certain task in the time frame you set. Just like the saying goes, "Rome wasn't built in a day" so make sure you allow for those time when things come up. Don't let these things such as phone calls, important emails, kids and life in general frustrate you, the important thing to remember is that you are making progress on your list.

Fourth thing is to Say No if it isn't important.

Whether you work from home or out of the home there are things that can distract us and waste time. Limit small talk with co-workers, family, friends, etc. while you are working. Respect your decision to make a plan and stick to it. Others will need to understand that if it isn't something that needs to be taken care of right this minute then it can wait.

Fifth is to Delegate.

Remember that you probably can't do everything yourself so if there is a task that you might not be very good at or like doing and there is someone that can do the task then by all means pass it on. In this way the task will get done and you won't waste time putting it off because you can't accomplish it yourself.

Compromise when necessary.

As your day progresses the urgency of a task may also change. There may be times when your tasks will need to be re-prioritized, rescheduled, postponed or dropped altogether, making adjustments if things come up that needs your attention is important.

Everyone has limitations and if you realize what those are then you will know what you can work on later to improve those skills or know in advance what tasks you will need help with.

Learning to manage your time is not to stress your day so remember to relax and learn as you go. The more you practice managing your time, the better you will get at it. Time management is so that you will take control of your days and see how much you really can accomplish each day and then enjoy some time with family and friends. This is your only viable option no matter where you are working, this is the only way to accomplish anything worthwhile.

Positive Thinking And Its Effect On Your Health

The first situation to consider is the relationship between thoughts and conditions like depression and stress. A crucial question is whether the person's thoughts are creating the physical depression or the physical depression is creating the negative thinking. When it comes to how you can use your mind to help, this can be accomplished consciously and subconsciously. When someone has a habit of imagining things turning out very badly, rational thinking can show show them that they often exaggerate. However, the unconscious mind is much more powerful in shaping our habitual behavior, oftentimes beyond our conscious control. Visualization and hypnosis can be very effective in modifying beliefs and, if you do this, the long-lasting effects can be more powerful than using logic only.

It is likewise true that positive thinking can have an impact on our physical health, and you may be aware of the placebo effect on people who feel ill. This is when individuals are given a pill which in reality does not have any healing value, and yet they claim to notice an improvement in how they feel. This is evidence of the connection between mind and body, and there are many examples of men and women with a positive outlook being able to recover faster from malady and injury. You can also use the power of your mind to help you in achieving your fitness goals. A historic example of this is when the four minute barrier for running the mile was broken, which had been considered as unachievable up to that point. Once the "barrier" had been broken, other runners also began to break through what had really been a barrier of belief.

The effects of aging are likewise influenced by how we think about the process. As you get older, do you talk to your friends about your "aches and pains" and your weakened capabilities? It seems there's a great deal of truth to the saying, "You're only as old as you think you are," and our thoughts can be used to undo a lot of the so-called effects of aging. Unfortunately, numerous individuals will continue to hold on to old beliefs about the unavoidable "decline" of health in old age, and not pay attention to the benefits of a positive outlook.

Now that you are aware that your attitude can bring you a much better state of health, it's up to you to take advantage of this information and set your intention to think positive thoughts whenever you remember.

From old diary- When Delhi airport looked like a massive fair

I remember once one of the senior expatriate employees from my previous organization said while travelling somewhere in Delhi with me “so many people are there in India” and I replied “you are still to see the real crowd” and he was looking at me amused.

India, the country known for its people (its real strength), from restaurant to market to local festivals to organized big fairs, wherever you go you will find crowd. Buses and trains are exceptionally blessed with crowds now days irrespective of the new bus services starting or the new trains and special trains every now and then. Nothing is sufficient for the ever increasing crowd.

The scenario was a bit different for airlines few decades back or few years back to be precise. Few years ago, airlines belonged primarily to elite class of India and travelling through airway used to be a matter of pride for everyone. Thanks to increasing income of average Indians and increasing necessities of corporate and people preferring to save time on certain occasions, crowd is giving run to airlines as well.

I would like to share a similar sight when during one of my journeys from Delhi to Mumbai made me realize the crowd what it is all about. It happened few days back when I was scheduled to fly from Delhi to Mumbai and several flights were delayed due to operational reasons (J & K flood was the contributing factor of the delay as several pilots were on emergency duty).

The crowd was endless and it seemed unmanageable due to the airport being under complete renovation with weekend evening flights contributing to the chaos. Delay in several flights was the obvious reason of the rush at airport.

The airport had definitely turned into a sight of fair where crowd was ever increasing with every minute passing. You would hardly find a place to sit comfortably which made people sitting on stairs and people were lying alongside the boarding gates, near restrooms and wherever you see.

There was huge rush at every coffee and snacks stall. It looked like people have come to sip the world famous coffee which probably is not available outside instead of boarding a flight. All such vendors must be feeling blessed as well as stressed. Their staffs must be gunning for a job everywhere but at airport after witnessing such crowd. People were just restless and would not wait for their turn to get their orders which makes you realize the typical Indian crowd where everyone is just not patient enough and would break queues wherever possible. Sometimes, it seemed that tea, coffee and snacks are free of cost at airport which is provoking people to get them.

Mostly flights were delayed by at least 2 hours and even after been informed people would check the flight announcements at an interval of 5 to 10 minutes to avoid missing their flights. Probably they wanted to break the monotony of waiting. There were sights of stampede whenever a boarding started irrespective of whoever’s flight, there were several onlookers getting jealous of others’ boarding as if they are the only sufferers of the delay that day. Airport authorities had a run for their job for sure while managing the rush.

Even I was anxious and impatient and didn’t enjoy this delay unlike on a railway platform where crowd is bit different and more interactive with strangers and another reason is that most of the time I travel with family and friends by train which makes bearing such delays not that terrible.

The waiting became even more unbearable due to all shops closed other than of beverages and snacks. Window shopping at airport, the favorite time pass was not available. Entire food court was also shut down reducing the sitting space drastically impacting the rush.

Fortunately, after a few boarding I got a place to sit which I hurriedly occupied. I thought for a while that the waiting will be easier since I had few magazines with me to read. But, my dream shattered and I found a highly ranting and irritatingly noisy couple sitting next to me who was like endless chatterbox. They just kept on talking and I found their voice the most unpleasant one considering the overall situation. If talking had any strong relation with burning calories, I am sure this couple would have developed six packs by the time they would reach their destination. I suddenly found that, they were not alone joining the race being the most crowned chatterbox; several turned into PMPO based noise pollutants.

Anyway, as destined I had my share of impatience and wait and only after two and half hours of delay I boarded the flight and guess what the problem didn’t end here. Soon the flight steward announced whose otherwise pleasant voice, didn’t sound soothing as he announced delay of another 30 minutes in take off.

Several passengers got irritated and their anger started bursting on crew members. A lady sitting behind my row called the crew member and asked her to knock the pilot’s cabin to confirm the time of take off and was not ready to listen anything. She also demanded food and beverage services before take-off which crew member found it difficult to convince her that it’s not possible before the flight takes off. That lady also shouted many times and this made me realize the quality of training in hospitality industry, due to which the crew member although been humiliated kept smiling.

Passengers started clapping once the take off announcement was made, which was a unique sight to witness. Another two hours spent and flight landed followed by the rush towards pre-paid taxi counter at Mumbai. And, you would experience another sight to narrate in length here.

I am sure, this is an unforgettable experience and many of you must have confronted with such scenarios while travelling. In short, Indian crowd is unbeatable.

Heartbeat- Ye Dil Ka Mamla Hai

You have got one heart only, take good care of it...

Today, India is a country with highest number of cases reported for heart diseases and it's very common to see some of our relatives, neighbours, friends and other known ones suffering from heart ailments more frequently than couple of decades ago.

Recently, one of my close relatives passed away due to severe heart attack. It was the 3rd time he got the cardiac attack and couldn't survive because of several reasons like lack of immediate medical assistance, his sixty plus age and non serious approach towards his health care despite knowing the fact that he already had this suffering earlier.

Even more strange and shocking incidence I came across recently is when I heard one of my friends of around 35 years of age suffered from an acute heart attack which he survived post surgery. But, it was really shocking due to his age and simple medical conditions (there was no visible sign of ill health as he has nearly normal weight, not very abrupt life style and no such family history).

So, looking at these cases and lot many around us, we are forced to rethink that what is the age after which we should undergo routine health check ups every year or even twice a year. Is it after 40 years, 35 years or even as low as 30 years.

More importantly, it's imperative to keep a check on your overall lifestyle instead of waiting for attaining certain age and relying and deciding upon medical check ups.

So, what's exactly triggering the situations leading towards several health issues including major ones like heart diseases. When we talk about the unhealthy lifestyle then it includes several factors including frequent alcohol consumption, smoking, not keeping a check on what you eat (dumping whatever you wish and love instead of what exactly your body requires), not giving enough time for physical exercise. Lack of proper sleep is also among major factors leading towards multiple health issues. It's quite common to see people ignoring proper sleep in today's fast paced life which is far more dangerous than we think.

Further, many of us tend to give excuses like not having enough time, being in client relationship profile which forces them to drink, not getting enough space to walk or jog, pollution and blah blah blah. But, the real question is that are we seriously too busy to take care of our health. Are we running behind money just to pay it to hospitals later or make our loved ones suffer emotionally and financially.

So, the most important thing is to stop giving excuses and be alert and sensitive enough towards health. A balance diet, regular physical activity and positive approach towards long term good health would solve the entire gamut of problems.

What is a balance and controlled diet. Lets take example of a car which has a fuel tank of 40 liters capacity. Can you fill the tank with 50 liters of fuel? You can't because it simply can't handle and doesn't require at all. Also, unless you use the fuel and empty the tank partially or completely, you can't refill the tank as well. Same goes with human body. It needs a defined quantity of food every day, neither less nor more. So, you should simply eat as and when you consume and require and not all the time and everything without keeping a check.

Engaging in some sports or any form of physical activity is necessary for all age groups and no excuse should be there. The more you make your body work regularly, the more it will get endured. We work entire day to meet our needs but not to meet Doctors, it's better to take out time for our body and fitness instead of devoting time for Doctors clinic and hospitals.

Routine health check ups on a regular interval of 6 months or 1 year is highly recommended as it helps become preventive.

You live once, better take care and make your life count.
